I was there to visit Chesterwood, the house and studio once belonging to Daniel Chester French, the artist responsible for the Abraham Lincoln sculpture in the Lincoln Memorial. Mostly, I came to the Berkshires because of the man who brought one of those presidents back to life. Not that I came all the way from New York City just to enjoy a chorus line of presidential assassins. The men who murdered Presidents Lincoln, Garfield, and McKinley were elbow to elbow with Lee Harvey Oswald and the klutzy girls who botched their hits on klutzy Gerald Ford, harmonizing on a toe-tapper called "Everybody's Got the Right to Be Happy," a song I cheerfully hummed walking back to the bed-and-breakfast where I was staying. There they were - John Wilkes Booth, Charles Guiteau, Leon Czolgosz - in tune and in the flesh. One night last summer, all the killers in my head assembled on a stage in Massachusetts to sing show tunes. In the book, Vowell travels to historical sites, piecing together stories of fallen presidents and the men who gunned them down. Opinion Memorial Gardens for Political LosersĬaustic commentator Sarah Vowell discusses her new book Assassination Vacation, a road trip into the history of presidential bloodshed.

On August 28, 1963, a young preacher named Martin Luther King, ascended the steps of the Lincoln Memorial in Washington, looked out on the crowd of a quarter million, and began a talk that changed the world:įive score years ago, a great American, in whose symbolic shadow we stand today, signed the Emancipation Proclamation. May his memory on this his 50th yahrtzeit be a blessing to our nation. Abraham Joshua Heschel, the great Jewish philosopher, declared that Martin Luther King was the evidence that God has not given up on the United States of America. It is fitting to return again to Dr King’s prophetic words, in his memory, and as a timely last word for our Pesach. Ironically, it falls during these days of Pesach - our holiday of liberation from slavery and our celebration of human dignity. This week, we commemorate the 50th yahrtzeit of Dr King, the fiftieth year since his assassination. On that occasion, I shared the following sermon with the VBS community. Rosh Hashanah in 2003 marked the 40th anniversary of Martin Luther King’s immortal “I Have a Dream” speech. Model selection based on Akaike's information criterion identified edge-sensitivity as the best correlate of vulnerability to fragmentation. After phylogenetic correction, these variables were used separately and in combination to assess their association with two indices of fragmentation sensitivity, species prevalence (proportion of islands occupied) as well as an index of change in abundance. We derived a series of explanatory variables from our capture data and from the literature: (1) natural abundance in continuous forest, (2) body mass, (3) trophic level, (4) dietary specialization, (5) vertical stratification, (6) edge-sensitivity, (7) mobility, (8) wing morphology (aspect ratio and relative wing loading) and (9) ecologically scaled landscape indices ( ESLIs). We compare hypotheses on the causes of interspecific differences in fragmentation sensitivity using distribution and abundance data collected on 23 species of Neotropical bats.īats were captured over a 2-year period on 11 land-bridge islands in Gatún Lake, Panama, and on the adjacent mainland. In the face of widespread human-induced habitat fragmentation, identification of those ecological characteristics that render some species more vulnerable to fragmentation than others is vital for understanding, predicting and mitigating the effects of habitat alteration on biodiversity. I could have enjoyed that and the characterization alone (particularly since the tension between Mo Xi and Gu Mang is enough to fill at least a hundred pages on its own) but then Meatbun upped the ante with the mystery of the brothel murders. So many wonderfully vivid descriptions, and such great, well-paced world-building. The writing (and the translation, unf!) is likewise amazing. I'm such a sucker for someone's dialogue preceding them it's such a great, memorable way to bring a new character in.) (Special shout-out to Murong Lian who, for my money, has the most entertaining and gripping entrance in the book. Meatbun does some really great work with characterization here: every time a new character would be introduced you'd get a sharp sense of their presence and personality within a few sentences of their introductions. From basically the first page this grabbed me. As expected of Meatbun: this was excellent. Once home to the Brontë sisters and their father, Patrick Brontë - who was a priest at the Haworth Parish Church next door - this historical building was purchased by a local businessman in 1928 and donated to the Brontë Society who turned it into a wonderful museum that commemorates the family and their works. Whether you're a book-lover or not, visiting the Brontë Parsonage Museum is an absolute must. That's why bookworms from all corners of the Earth gravitate to Haworth year-round to see where classic novels like Wuthering Heights, Jane Eyre, and The Tenant of Wildfell Hall were written. Their novels became global sensations, and even today, they're well-established and famous all around the world, being hailed as some of the greatest pieces of the literary art of all time. So, to avoid their writing not being taken seriously, the sisters first submitted their manuscripts and published their works under the male pen names Currer, Ellis, and Acton Bell. In 1826, their father Patrick gave Branwell a set of toy soldiers. In this period of history, women had very few privileges and even fewer rights - the right to vote not even arriving for yet another century. Charlotte, Emily and Anne were born in 1816, 18 respectively, three of an original family of six children however, by 1825 they, alongside their brother Branwell, were the only ones who had survived their mother and sisters having died. 22) Virgos possess an aspirational kind of beauty and a keep-it-together-even-when-the-house-is-on-fire kind of poise. Writing with honesty and disarming humanity, Wil touches on the frustrations associated with his acting career, his inability to distance himself from Ensign Crusher in the public’s eyes, the launch of his incredibly successful web site,, and the joy he’s found in writing. You’ll understand the rigors, and joys, of Wil’s rediscovering of himself, as he comes to terms with what it means to be famous, or, ironically, famous for once having been famous. In the oddest of places, Topeka, Kansas, Wil discovered that despite his claims to fame, he was at heart “Just a Geek.” In this bestselling book, Wil shares his deeply personal and difficult journey to find himself. Despite early stardom through his childhood role in the motion picture “Stand By Me,” and growing up on television as Wesley Crusher on “Star Trek: The Next Generation,” Wil left Hollywood in pursuit of happiness, purpose, and a viable means of paying the bills. Wil Wheaton has never been one to take the conventional path to success. A look into the fandom behind Star Trek, redefining identity and growing up. |
