Hemingway began writing stories in this collection the same year that he published his first short story collection, IN OUR TIME – but in the intervening years, his career would change dramatically. In fact I've spent a ludicrous, quite unjustifiable amount of time analysing how exactly I feel about porn. I find a lot of things about it problematic – though, admittedly, not usually at the time. I like it, but I've never viewed it uncritically. Then again, you often see people defend it on free-speech grounds while, as it were, holding their own nose: ‘Censorship is bad – though of course I would never look at that stuff.’ I find these arguments unsatisfactory, so if I begin now by saying that I really like porn, it's not to make everyone uncomfortable but to connect cards with table and also to establish my own set of dubious credentials in this area. Those arguing for it are presumed to be avid consumers. Those arguing against it tend to come across as though they merely find it distasteful on a personal level. Several years later, they were joined by Kara Dalkey. Patricia finished her first novel in late 1978. Dalton Booksellers, and finally at the Dayton Hudson Corporation headquarters. She worked for several years as a financial analyst and accountant, first with the Minnesota Hospital Association, then with B. from the University of Minnesota in 1977. She finished it five years later and started her second book at once, having become permanently hooked on writing by this time.
