I could have enjoyed that and the characterization alone (particularly since the tension between Mo Xi and Gu Mang is enough to fill at least a hundred pages on its own) but then Meatbun upped the ante with the mystery of the brothel murders. So many wonderfully vivid descriptions, and such great, well-paced world-building. The writing (and the translation, unf!) is likewise amazing. I'm such a sucker for someone's dialogue preceding them it's such a great, memorable way to bring a new character in.) (Special shout-out to Murong Lian who, for my money, has the most entertaining and gripping entrance in the book. Meatbun does some really great work with characterization here: every time a new character would be introduced you'd get a sharp sense of their presence and personality within a few sentences of their introductions. From basically the first page this grabbed me. As expected of Meatbun: this was excellent.
